Sculptor’s Cabin in Guild Park Re-Opens

Originally built in 1940 but closed to the public since 1988, the Sculptor’s Cabin in Guild Park re-opened yesterday (June 8, 2019) after more than 30 years of neglect.

The restoration and re-opening of the Sculptor’s Cabin is the result of three years of collaborative efforts by the City of Toronto (Jo Ann Pynn, Nadira Pattison, Julie Frost and Councillor Paul Ainslie) and active volunteers from Friends of Guild Park, Guild Festival Theatre, Guild Renaissance Group and Guildwood Village Community Association.

The re-opening of the Sculptor’s Cabin marks a major milestone in Guild Park’s ongoing revitalization. It will now serve as a seasonal Welcoming & Activity Centre for Guild Park visitors.

The official opening on June 8, 2019 was an event of incredible energy. We were there to catch some of it on camera.

Dorsey James, the last Sculptor in Residence at the Guild of All Arts to work out of the Sculptor’s Cabin, shares the stories behind his carvings decorating the front of the cabin as well as the time he won an argument with Spencer Clark about dragons.

John Mason, President of Friends of Guild Park & Gardens, addresses the significance of the cabin re-opening and acknowledges the many people, volunteers, city staff, elected officials and private contractor that made this possible.

Hjælp os finde Aage Madsens efterkommere. Aage Madsen byggede denne hytte i Scarborough i Canada i 1940 men det er stort set alt hvad vi ved om ham. Hytten har forfaldet i over 30 år men er netop blevet restaureret fuldt ud til samme stand som Aage byggede den og hytten genåbnede i dag for første gang i en hel generation.

Vi vil helt vildt gerne vise Aage Madsens efterkommere hvordan hytten han byggede for snart 80 år siden står i dag.

Vi ved ikke med sikkerhed hvornår han kom Canada, om han blev her eller rejste til andre lande eller hjem til Danmark. Vi ved bare at han var en af de første Sculptors in Residence i det der dengang var Guild of All Arts i Guild Park hvor hytten står. Det kunne være sjovt st få kontakt med Aages familie.

  1. I’m very happy to see this building restored and opened again, from what I’ve been told it won’t be used as a sculptors cabin anymore which I feel is a shame. As a sculptor myself there are so few affordable places for sculptors to work in Toronto.
